Introduction to Engineering

Engineers use math and science to solve problems. They make things like machines, buildings, tools ... but most importantly they drive improvement in technology.

Technology includes anything that improves the skills, methods, and processes used to achieve goals like producing goods or services. Without engineers we wouldn't know how to make things better, cheaper, and create entirely new things that never existed before!

There are many types of Engineers. Here are just four:

  1. Civil engineers that design and build buildings, roads, and bridges.

  2. Electrical engineers create parts of things like computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

  3. Mechanical engineers study movement in heat and energy to help them design new machines and tools.

  4. Chemical engineers turn minerals into useful products including medicine.

New kinds of engineering problems are being worked on every day. For example, Biomedical Engineers invent things like artificial hearts and artificial arms. In the future, they may invent artificial pancreas, which can cure Type 1 diabetes!

Elon Musk is my favorite engineer because he is doing so many things to help the planet! He created Tesla which produces the world's coolest electric cars (according to me), the world's first spaceships that can take off and land (see video), the world's first cars that can drive themselves on just about any highway, tunnels underground to reduce traffic congestion, satellites that can provide wifi from space, the world's first solar roof, and the world's largest electric batteries.

If you want to be like Elon Musk you need to become an engineer, and not just one kind either. He started out as a computer engineer, writing software for games and mapping applications, but in order to start Tesla and SpaceX he had to learn about electric power, rocketry, artificial intelligence, and so much more.

If we did not have engineers then we would be living like monkeys. We would not have electricity, modern cities and houses, and we would not have machines. Engineers have completely changed our lives.

What kind of engineer do you want to be?


In this section we are going to talk about mechanical engineering. They design power-producing machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, machines inside buildings, such as elevators and escalators. Some of the history of mechanical engineering can be explained through the transportation. Long time ago, the only transportation, was either camels or horses. Then when mechanical engineers came along, that all changed. There was someone who created the steam engine that was used for trains, then there was cars and airplanes. here is the link to the video.

Now we are going to talk about civil engineers. Civil engineers are the engineers that make thing like roads, bridges, buildings, and much more. Civil engineers have made every house you've been to, and the hospital you were born in. They have completely changed our society. If we did not have civil engineers then you wouldn't have a house or school; just to make this clear there would be no buildings, no roads, almost nothing.

There's a story about a lighthouse. There was a person that was sailing across the sea. When he came to a little rocky island, he stopped on the island to look around. Then he thought it would be a good idea to build a lighthouse, so he built a lighthouse that was made out of wood that lasted for about a year, when a storm came and made the house fall apart. So then he built another one with better wood that lasted for almost 100 years; but then it burned to the ground by a spark of a candle. So then someone else made a lighthouse that was made out of stone and that lasted for about 500 years. Here is the link to the video.

There are also electrical engineers. They make things in the electric system like computers, and phones. Imagine the world without electrical engineers that means no computers, no phones, no electricity. Electrical engineers work on many kinds of products. They can work on things such as cars, robots, cell phone systems, the lighting and wiring in buildings. if you want to be a electrical engineer then you need to know many different parts of many different things. Imagine you want to make something. And right now let's just say that thing is a computer. And let's say that you what to make lots of good ones and you want them to be made pretty fast. You are going to need a system. This is where industrial engineers come in. They create systems. you need lots people to make the computers or you need lots of people to build the machines that make the computers. All of those people are engineers, but industrial engineers not only make the machines but they also design the system. This is why we need industrial engineers.
